AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY FEATURE S-YÉWYÁW - AWAKEN SET FOR NATIONAL PREMIERE ACROSS CANADA

Stories of Hope and Homecoming intersect as Indigenous Multimedia Changemakers Learn & Document the Teachings of their Elders

Vancouver, BC (January 22, 2024) – Elders’ Film Inc. is pleased to announce that the award-winning feature-length documentary s-yéwyáw / AWAKEN will be available to audiences across Canada free on demand on TELUS Optik TV channel 8 and online at watch.telusoriginals.com on Tuesday, February 13th, 2024. The film will also premiere on the same day on Hollywood Suite’s 2000s channel at 9pm ET / 6pm PT, and will be available on Hollywood Suite On Demand. After a successful world premiere at the Planet In Focus International Environmental Film Festival in Toronto, where the film won the People’s Choice Award and a sold-out Vancouver theatrical premiere last fall, s-yéwyáw / AWAKEN will be available to audiences across the country for the first time.

The TELUS original film, directed by award-winning filmmaker #LizMarshall (Meat The Future, Midian Farm), features stories of hope and homecoming as Indigenous multimedia changemakers learn and document the teachings of their Elders. The character-driven documentary connects the transformative stories of artist, musician and medicine woman #EckoAleck of the Nlaka'pamux Nation (Lytton, BC), filmmaker and Traditional Wellness Coordinator #AlfonsoSalinas of the shíshálh Nation (Sunshine Coast, BC) and storyteller and impact producer #CharleneSanJenko of Splatsin of the Secwépemc Nation (Shuswap, BC) as they learn and document the traditional cultural teachings and legacies of their Elders, including the impacts of Canada’s Residential School system. Infused with Indigenous ceremony, s-yéwyáw / AWAKEN walks alongside the process of intergenerational healing and calls the audience’s attention to the filmmaking process of narrative collaboration between an Indigenous and settler team.

“It is our ultimate hope that through the ripples of outreach, this film becomes a toolkit and knowledge basket for intergenerational Indigenous healing journeys, while simultaneously holding a beacon of understanding and inspired action for our settler allies,” says the film team, which includes Ecko Aleck, Liz Marshall, Charlene SanJenko and Alfonso Salinas.

s-yéwyáw / AWAKEN is written and co-produced by Ecko Aleck, Liz Marshall, Alfonso Salinas, Charlene SanJenko, directed by Liz Marshall, executive producer is Liz Marshall, senior production executive for TELUS originals is Christina Willings, line producer is Patti Poskitt, associate producer is Özgün Gündüz and impact producers  Charlene SanJenko and Ecko Aleck. Edited by Eddie O., with cinematography by Eva Anandi Brownstein, Liz Marshall, Inder Nirwan and Diana Parry, music composer is Ecko Aleck, sound editor and re-recording mixer is Oscar Vargas.

The film was produced with the support of TELUS, developed with the participation of Creative BC, produced in association with Hollywood Suite and Knowledge Network. Funded in part by the province of BC Film Incentive BC and the Canadian Film and Video Production Tax Credit.

The film continues its grassroots journey carrying the ripples out into Indigenous communities throughout 2024, accompanied by Ecko and Terry Aleck’s teachings and circle facilitation tools. Community screening requests are open and available on the website. s-yéwyáw / AWAKEN is also available for educational distribution through McIntyre Media.

s-yéwyáw / AWAKEN was filmed respectfully on the unceded homelands of the shíshálh and sḵwx̱wú7mesh Peoples, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm and səlilwətaɬ Territories, Splatsin te Secwepemcul’ecw, Qualicum First Nation, Nlaka'pamux Territory.
